Halloween. It’s not officially a holiday, but for many people, it’s their favorite day of the year. While everyone gets the gist of Halloween, there’s a lot of history behind this day, including some interesting facts you might not already know.
Black and Orange Isn’t an Accident
When it comes to Halloween decorations, you probably include a lot of black and orange. They look nice together, but they also have some historical significance. More specifically, the orange is to symbolize the changing leaves as part of autumn, while the black is about death. Ancient people used this color combo “to gain strength for the long winter ahead and celebrate the dead during a traditional holiday.”
Halloween Was Once About Romance!
While we don’t usually associate Halloween with romance – Valentine’s Day is a whole other day for that mushy stuff – there is evidence that it once was a way for Scottish girls to envision their future husband by hanging wet sheets near the fire on the day, which apparently presented the image of their suitor.
Costumes Were for Protection
Dressing up wasn’t to mimic the latest superhero. Donning a disguise was a way for people to “hide from spirits who returned at this time of year”. The story goes that people would put on masks after dark to confuse ghosts into thinking they were one of them. And it adds that people left bowls of food outside their house to keep spirits from coming inside.
Sweets and Autumn Might Have a Connection
Sweet treats are yummy any time of year (as long as you don’t overdo it). However, TheKitchn.com also explains that there might be “reasonable significance” to eating sweet stuff when the temperature starts to drop in fall. This dates back to when people would preserve food for the winter using sugar and honey, it notes. It also mentions a human instinct to “pack on some pounds before winter, when fresh food might not be as readily available.”

هرچند هالووین رسما تعطیلات نیست ولی برای خیلیا روز مورد علاقه شون در ساله. درحالیکه همه راجع به کلیات هالووین میدونن، تاریخچه زیادی پشت این روز هست که شامل حقایقی میشه که شاید قبلا نمیدونستین.
رنگ های مشکی و نارنجی تصادفی نیستن
وقتی راجع به دکوراسیون هالووین حرف میزنیم، احتمالا یاد تزئینات مشکی و نارنجی میفتین. این دو رنگ با هم قشنگن ولی یه معنی تاریخی هم دارن. دقیق ترش اینه که نارنجی نشون دهنده تغییر رنگ برگ ها به عنوان قسمتی از فصل پاییز و رنگ مشکی هم راجع به مرگ هست. مردم دوران باستان از این ترکیب رنگی به منظور بدست آوردن قدرت کافی برای زمستان پیش رو و بزرگداشت درگذشتگان توی این تعطیلات استفاده میکردن.
هالووین یه زمانی راجع به عشق بوده!
هرچند که ما معمولا عشق و مسائل رومانتیک رو قاطی هالووین نمیکنیم (ولنتاین یه روز کاملا جدا واسه این کارای احساسیه) ولی شواهد نشون میده یه زمانی دخترای اسکاتلندی در هالووین با آویزون کردن ملحفه های خیس نزدیک آتیش که تصویر مردی که قراره باهاش ازدواج کنن رو نشون میداده، همسر آینده شون رو متصور میشدن.
لباس ها درواقع برای محافظت بودن
پوشیدن لباس مبدل برای تقلید از جدید ترین ابرقهرمان ها نبوده. پوشیدن این لباس راهی بوده برای مردم تا از ارواحی که در این موقع از سال برمیگردن پنهون بشن. داستان اینجوریه که مردم بعد از تاریک شدن هوا ماسک میزدن تا ارواح رو گیج کنن و مردم رو با عضوی از خودشون اشتباه بگیرن. همچنین مردم پشت در خونشون یه کاسه غذا میذاشتن که از ورود ارواح به داخل خونه جلوگیری کنن و اونا رو بیرون نگه دارن.
احتمالا شیرینی و پاییز یه ربطی به هم دارن
شیرینی جات هر زمانی از سال خوشمزه ان (البته تا وقتی که زیاده روی نکنین). سایت TheKitchen.com توضیح میده که یه رابطه منطقی احتمالا بین خوردن شیرینی و افت دما در پاییز وجود داره. این برمیگرده به زمانی که مردم با عسل و شکر برای زمستون غذا ذخیره میکردن. همچنین اشاره میکنه به غریزه انسان که قبل از زمستون یک مقدار چربی اضافه میکنن برای وقتی که شاید غذای تازه در دسترس نباشه.
