The painting was exhibited alongside the paint cans and brushes that the artists used to create the artwork — which the couple took as an invitation to collaborate.

A young couple in South Korea made the grave mistake of a lifetime. They spent their Sunday at the Lotte World Mall in Seoul and spotted a rather eye-catching painting in the Street Noise exhibit. Interpreting the paint buckets and brushes lying below the work as an invitation to collaborate, they happily contributed a few strokes of their own — and ruined a $440,000 painting.

The anonymous twenty-something couple was blissfully oblivious to the fact that they had just become vandals. They genuinely believed it was a participatory work, because of the paint and brushes underneath.

However, the painting had been displayed this way since 2016, when American graffiti artist John Andrew Perello finished it before an audience for “The Great Graffiti” show at the Seoul Arts Center. Perello, who goes by JonOne, has decided not to respond to the incident. The culprits were caught.
