Harmful Gender Stereotypes: Caring or Killing

Gender stereotypes begin in early childhood. Across the globe, bright pink and blue are excluded to be “toys for girls” and “toys for boys” respectively. In the boys’ section, you’ll encounter science, construction and warfare toys — perhaps a motorized robot, or a telescope. In the girls’ aisle, you’ll get toys related to cleaning, prams, dolls, kitchens, makeup, jewelry and crafts.

Our survey exhibits that by the early years of primary school, gender stereotypes from a variety of sources have already influenced children — leading them to aspire to “traditional” male and female vocations. For instance, the top three choices for boys are careers in professional sports, science-related jobs, and policing or defense. Meanwhile, girls either want to be teachers, work with animals, or pursue a career in the arts.

We have to dispute heresies about the roles of men and women in society. And we have to challenge them early. A way to pursue this is to end the sale of gendered and stereotypical toys, which research has shown can trigger inaccurate insights about gender roles in young children. Therefore, separating sections for “boys” and “girls” should be banned, and there should be plenty of gender-neutral toys available.

LEGO, the world’s earnest toy-maker, announced its future products and marketing will be free of gender bias and harmful stereotypes. This is a start. Hopefully more companies will follow suit. We should stop telling children that what constitutes acceptable play depends on their gender. Let’s let girls be scientist and boys be carers, if that’s what they want.

Gender stereotypes start in childhood. Bright pink toys for girls and blue toys for boys are sold around the world. In the boys’ part, you will find science, construction and warfare toys – perhaps a motorized robot or a telescope. In the girls’ lane, you’ll see toys for cleaning, baby strollers , dolls, kitchens, make up, jewelry and crafts.

Our research shows these clichés with different sources have already affected children. Actually, this attitude pushes them to believe in the “traditional” idea that men and women have to do a particular type of job. For example, the top three job choices for boys are professional sports, science-related jobs, and policing or defense. On the other hand, girls want to be teachers, work with animals, or follow a career in the arts.

We have to discuss false beliefs about the roles of men and women in society. And we have to challenge them now. One way to do it is to end the sale of gendered and stereotypical toys, and this which can give young children wrong ideas about gender roles, based on the research. So, the law should stop separating sections for “boys” and “girls” and many toys should be available which are not specific to boys or girls.

LEGO, the world’s largest toy maker, stated that its future products and marketing will not be specific to girls or boys and free of harmful stereotypes. This is a start. Hopefully more companies will follow this approach. We should stop telling children that their gender identifies the right game for them to play. Let’s let girls be scientists and boys be carers, if they want to be.

کلیشه های مربوط به جنسیت از زمان کودکی شروع میشن. همه جای دنیا، رنگ صورتی روشن به عنوان اسباب بازی دخترونه و رنگ آبی روشن به عنوان اسباب بازی‌های پسرونه تو فروشگاه ها فروخته میشه. تو قسمت پسرها اسباب بازی های علمی، ساختمون سازی، جنگی و شاید ربات های متحرک و تلسکوپ پیدا میشه در حالیکه در قسمت دخترها شما میتونید وسایل بازی مربوط به آشپزخانه ، کالسکه بچه، عروسک، تمیزکاری، آرایشی، زیورآلات و کاردستی ببینید.

بررسی‌ها نشون میده از اوایل دوره دبستان کلیشه های جنسیتی با منابع متفاوت و گوناگون روی بچه ها اثر گذار بوده و اونا رو به سمت این باور سنتی که زن و مرد حرفه های مختلفی تو این دنیا دارن هدایت میکنن. به عنوان مثال سه انتخاب اول پسرها برای شغلشون ورزش حرفه ای، کارای علمی، پلیسی و دفاعیه درحالیکه دخترا یا میخوان معلم بشن، یا با حیوانات کار کنن و یا برن سراغ کار های هنری.

ما باید این باور های غلط راجع به نقش زنان و مردان در جامعه رو به چالش بکشیم و این کار باید خیلی زود انجام بشه. یکی از راه های انجام این کار نفروختن اسباب بازی های جنسیت زده یا کلیشه ایه؛ اسباب‌بازی‌ هایی که تحقیقات ما ثابت کرده میتونن باور غلطی راجع به نقش خانوم ها و آقایون رو توی ذهن بچه های کم سن ایجاد کنن. برای همین قسمت مختص پسرها و یا دخترها باید ممنوع بشه و یا حتی اسباب بازی هایی با جنسیت خنثی تولید بشن.

کمپانی لگو که بزرگ ترین تولید کننده اسباب بازی دنیاست اعلام کرده محصولات آینده اش عاری از کلیشه های مخرب و نابرابری های جنسیتی هستن. این یک شروعه و امیدواریم شرکت های بیشتری این رویه رو پیش بگیرن. ما نباید به بچه هامون بر اساس جنسیتشون بگیم چه بازی هایی براشون خوبه. بزاریم دخترا دانشمند و پسرا حامی و مراقب باشن اگر خودشون اینجوری دوست دارن.
