Liars Mimic the Body Language of the Person They Are Lying to

Liars often deliberately change their behavior into a way they think truth-tellers behave, but this particular copycat behavior is something they wouldn’t even try to manipulate and that could make it an interesting cue for detecting deceit.When telling a lie, liars may imitate the body language of other people they are lying to without realizing they are doing it.

A group of researchers asked 50 university students to solve a supposedly simple wooden puzzle within 5 minutes. In reality, the puzzle was far too hard to solve in the time available. One of the researchers hid the puzzle solutions in the room where the students could find them, which encouraged the students to cheat. They then asked the students not to tell the supervisor that the researchers had “accidentally” left the solutions in the room. The researchers then recorded interviews as each student told another student about the puzzle challenge. The results demonstrated that when a student was telling the truth, their body movements differed from those of the person asking questions. But when they were lying, the movements of the two speakers tended to align.

This may be due to the fact that lying requires so much concentration, so speakers might subconsciously slip into mimicking their listener’s body movements because copying requires less thinking than coming up with their own body language. This way of coping with “cognitive overload” isn’t obvious to the naked eye, but was detectable with the accelerometers.

Liars often change their behavior into a way they think truth-tellers behave, but this certain imitative behavior is something they wouldn’t even try to control and that could make it an interesting sign to recognise that someone is lying. When liars tell a lie, they may imitate the body language of other people they are lying to without understanding they are doing it.

A group of researchers asked 50 university students to solve a seemingly simple wooden puzzle in 5 minutes. In reality, the puzzle was too hard to solve in the given time. One of the researchers hid the puzzle solutions in the room where the students could find them, and this caused the students to cheat . یک تیم تحقیقاتی از 50 دانشجو خواستن که یه معمای چوبی به ظاهر ساده رو در 5 دقیقه حل کنن. اما در واقع حل اون معما در این زمان بسیار سخت بود. یکی از محققان راه حل های معما رو در اتاقی که دانشجوها بتونن پیداش کنن پنهان کرد که همین اونارو تشویق به تقلب میکرد. بعد از دانشجوها خواسته شد که به سرپرست نگن که محققان راه حل هارو "به صورت اتفاقی" در اتاق جا گذاشتن. محققان مصاحبه هارو زمانی که هر دانشجو با دانشجوی دیگه درباره چالش حل معما صحبت میکردن ضبط کردن. نتایج نشون داد که وقتی دانشجوها حقیقت رو میگفتن حرکات بدنشون با حرکات بدن کسی که سوال میپرسید فرق میکرد اما وقتی اونا دروغ میگفتن حرکات بدن هر دو نفر شبیه تر بود.

این میتونه به این دلیل باشه که دروغ گفتن نیاز به تمرکز زیاده داره پس آدما ممکنه کاملا ناخودآگاه شروع به تقلید کردن از حرکات بدن شنونده بکنن چون تقلید کردن نیازمند فکر کمتریه نسبت به برنامه ریزی برای زبان بدن خاص خودشون. این نوع مدیریت کردن "بار زیاد اطلاعاتی" با چشم غیرمسلح مشخص نیست بلکه توسط دستگاه حرکت سنج قابل تشخیصه.
