The World Cup
Richard: we’re talking about the World Cup And when I say the World Cup, I mean the World Cup itself.
Jackie: You mean... you mean the trophy?
Richard: Yes, the trophy. So Jackie, what does the trophy look like?
Jackie: I think its a man [Richard laughs] and I think there's something round on top, so I think he's holding a football.
Richard: No. Its two women...
Jackie: Oh, really?
Richard: ...back to back, holding the globe, the Earth.
Jackie: You know I never realised that. I really, really didn't realise that.
Richard: And how big is it?
Jackie: Twenty-five, 30 centimetres?
Richard: Forty centimetres.
Jackie: Bit bigger, then.
Richard: And what's it made of?
Jackie: Oh. Well, actually they say its solid gold, don't they?
Richard: They say its made of gold but a scientist in the UK has said if it was made of gold, 40cm high, it would be too heavy to hold. Although FIFA won't admit it um... most people now think its hollow. So that's why it only weighs six kilograms. And what's the other interesting thing about the World Cup?
Jackie: You mean the trophy still?
Richard: Yes, which is called the World Cup.
Jackie: Its not a cup.
Richard: [laughs] Ifs not a cup, is it? It's just a trophy.
Jackie: It's a statue.
Richard: It's a statue. And is it the original?
Jackie: I know that's changed. It has changed, hasn't it?
Richard: Right. What was the original?
Jackie: It was more cup-like [laughs].
Richard: Yes, it was actually a cup, it was called the Jules Rimet trophy.Interesting story there: England won it in 1966 and just after they won it, it got stolen and then very famously a dog found it in someone's garden. The dog was called Pickles.
Jackie: And Pickles found it.
Richard: Pickles the dog found it very famously. It was won three times by Brazil and therefore they got to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy.
Jackie: Okay, so Brazil have the original cup, then.
Richard: No, they don't, it was stolen again. It was stolen in 1986 and it has never been found.
Jackie: Oh. So we need another Pickles, then.
Richard: Yes, so that was the original trophy, so what about the new trophy? Who's got that now?
Jackie: Well um... Spain won it last time, so its sitting in the Spanish boss' office somewhere.
Richard: No, its not because the winners don't get to keep the new trophy either.
Richard: FIFA keep the new trophy at all times and the winners only get a replica.
Jackie: So... alright, but on the day of the tournament, the final of the finals and someone gets given that trophy, is that the real one then?
Richard: I think so but no one is ever sure. They get the trophy, the real trophy but then they have to give it back to FIFA and then they only get a replica which I think is only gold plated. And the other thing is, like most cups, the winner's name is engraved on the cup, isn't it?
Jackie: So this statue thing, where are the names on that, then?
Richard: On the base, underneath. So you can only see the winners' names if you look under the trophy.
Jackie: Not a lot of space there I would have thought.
Richard: Exactly. Another interesting fact is there is only enough room for four more winners to go on it.
Jackie: So another sixteen years.
Richard: Which, funnily enough, 2030 will be the centenary of FIFA so maybe there'll be a new trophy in 2030.
Jackie: And lets hope its a cup this time.
Richard: And let's hope it doesn't get stolen.
