Richard: were looking at where the refugees come from, where they want to go and also the journey.
Jackie: Now from what we see on the telly and... and read in the newspapers Richard um... it's... it's... the focus is on Syrians.
Richard: Yes. They're by far the... the majority of refugees but not all of the refugees. Er... I've got some figures here for you: 50% come from Syria, 13 Afghanistan, 8% Eritrea, and smaller amounts from Nigeria, Somalia and Pakistan.
Jackie: Well, 50% of them are Syrians, Richard, so let's focus on them.Um...now I know that an enormous number of Syrian refugees have already gone to Lebanon, 1.2million refugees.
Richard: When they thought the... the problems there would be temporary, yes.
Jackie: Well, its easy to get to Lebanon, it's on the border, isn't it? And yes, they are culturally similar.
Richard: Yes, its interesting that um... Lebanon now has a population of 4.5 million: of that, 1.2 million are Syrian refugees.
Jackie: Yes, so this means a country 100 times smaller than Europe has already taken in more than 50 times as many refugees as Europe.
Richard: Yes, but the situation has changed now because there's no end in sight to the war in Syria so more and more of them want to get to Europe to make a new life.
Jackie: Yeah. Now as far as Europe is concerned, citizens that come from countries which are torn apart by war, suffer dictatorial oppression and religious extremism those... the citizens from those countries almost always have a right to refuge in Europe. But its not an easy journey, Richard. Richard: Yes, to get to Europe urn... the Syrians have to go through Turkey.
Jackie: Why don't they stay there?
Richard: Because they have no right to work there legally, the camp conditions there are very, very harsh and simply the UN agencies have run out of money.
Jackie: And then from Turkey of course, Richard, most Syrians take the awful, perilous journey from urn...from Turkey to Greece, to the Greek Islands.
Richard: And from there making their way through South East Europe, through the Balkans um...
Jackie: Yes, the Balkan route they call it, Macedonia, Serbia...
Richard: Mmm, going through Hungary and onto Austria.
Jackie: Yeah. But the journey doesn't finish in Austria, does it? Er... I think specifically refugees are heading for Germany, Sweden and France.
Richard: Okay. That's interesting. Why do you think that is?
Jackie: Well, they understand that there are good working conditions there in those countries, they have a good economic climate and...
Richard: The... the people seem to be more welcoming in those countries, certainly, don't they?
Jackie: Absolutely, absolutely, and they get, you know, support, financial benefits as well.
Richard: Yes, but even once they've made that journey to Western Europe for those Syrian refugees there's still a long journey ahead for them to make a new life.
