A mouse in the house
Jackie: I'm talking to my friend, Jo. Hi, Jo.
Jo: Hi there.
Jackie: Jo, I understand that you have some unwanted visitors in your house.
Jo: Mmm yes, that's true. [both laugh] Well, rather unfortunately last January I saw a mouse on my bookcase and I got such a shock, because I... I live in a flat in Lisbon, it’s a capital city, I just never thought for a minute that I'd see a flat, sorry, a... a mouse in my flat.
Jackie: So the mouse was on the bookshelf, in the living room.
Jackie: Okay. So that freaked you out a little bit.
Jo: It did a bit, yes.
Jackie: So what did you decide to do?
Jo: Um... we... we bought some poison um... some kind of little pellets and put that down in various places but honestly we never saw the actual animal again, only the um... the evidence they leave behind. But we never actually saw the animal again.
Jackie: So what did you do next?
Jo: We continued to put poison down and then, as it was clearly obvious, say by the summer they were still around, although I never did find out how they, you know, get in and get out, we contacted a company. [Jackie: Right] And we found their details online and this guy came round and he looked, you know, in the flat and he was, I don't know, really helpful and within one day he'd set all these cardboard traps [Jackie: Right] all over the flat, about ten of them in various different places, with poison as well um... and we had to pay for that obviously, they came back after a month and they checked the traps but they hadn't found anything but they had found that the poison had been eaten [Jackie: Right] but they didn't actually find any urn.. Bodies.
Jackie: Right. So they went away.
Jo: Well, I thought then that the... we kept the traps down but I kind of thought that that was the end of it. And then at the end of November I was up very early one morning, I couldn't sleep for some reason, and I went into the kitchen, it was about Sam, and there was a mouse next to the washing machine.
Jackie: There was Mickey.
Jo: Mickey the Mouse, yeah. Mickey Mouse. Oh dear, very depressing.
Jackie: What's the latest situation?
Jo: Well, I put more traps down behind the washing machine. It was like an obstacle course, and it worked. We caught one.
Jo: We caught one. So I don't know if that's the end of it or if that news gets back to the family and puts the rest of them off but I just don't know. I'm... I'm— we've still got traps down and more poison and just keep plugging away at it.
Jackie: Not very nice for you then, Jo.
Jo: No. It’s not very nice at all. I just never expected it.
Jackie: If... if you the listeners have had a similar problem and you've got any great ideas about what Jo can do to get rid of her mice...
Jo: Please, yes.
Jackie: ...write in and tell us, we’d love to hear from you.
Jo: Yes, please do.
