Is that a Mango t-shirt?
Jackie:we're talking about brands. And with me is my friend Jo. Hi Jo.
Jackie:Flow Jo, you told me the other day that you were going to buy a pair of shoes, right?
Jackie:[laughs] You like buying shoes.
Jo:I love shoes, yes.
Jackie:Are you going to buy a particular brand of shoes or are you going to go to a particular shop first? Do you have a favorite?
Jo:Well, I never thought I would um... fall for the um... kind of hype but I really like Camper shoes.
Jackie: And where do they come from, Camper shoes?
Jo:They come from Mallorca um... but I first found out about them through my sister who's based in England but I admired some shoes she had on, I thought they were fantastic and a bit quirky, and it just went on from there and finally when I came to Portugal, I um... you know, went the whole way and bought my first pair and I've got about four or five pairs now.
Jackie: Cos they quite expensive, aren't they?
Jo:They are really quite expensive, but they're beautifully made, they are a bit different, they're quite colorful, terribly comfortable, really comfortable, so yeah, it seems to be worth it in the end.
Jackie:Do you think there are other things, other things um... that you buy that you automatically go for a certain of brand, for example um... a camera. You've also got a new camera recently. Would you buy a particular brand for a camera?
Jo:Personally no because I don't know an awful lot about, you know, sort of which one is the best to get. I know you've got Olympus, and...
Jo:Yes, what's the other one? Um... Nikon?
Jo:Um... you know but, no, I mean the... the camera I've got now at the moment was a... was a Christmas present which took me ages actually to open up and, you know, get to use properly but of course it wasn't so difficult once I got going.
Jackie:So do you think there is anything else that you, that you buy, that you go for a particular brand?
Jo:Um... when I was doing things in my new kitchen and I wanted some new appliances um... you know, I knew the name Braun being quite reliable, so I've got a few things by Braun um... and Morphy Richards, is also quite well known. Um...
Jackie:How do you think those names become famous? Do you think it's through advertising or do you think it's, like with your sister and the shoes, it's what other people buy and you're influenced by that?
Jo:Well I would imagine it's probably a combination of that sort of thing er... and also like, not just my sister, but friends who might say, "Oh, I've just bought this and it works really well", so you keep that in your mind and when you're out shopping and you say, "That's the one that Jackie's got, or that's the one that Lynne's got", you know and they've raved about it and so you think well that's a good recommendation.
Jackie:Would you ever buy something... of a brand that you've never heard about?
Jo:Um... it depends I suppose what it was.
Jackie:And maybe how much it costs.
Jo:Cost. And if it's something, you know, like electrical, like a television, I don't know... I think vie do kind of fall for um... logos and brands and longevity and reliability and as I say word of mouth and you know I've seen some funny names when I've been working in the Far East, on electrical goods, I've never heard of them obviously, but perfectly fine and perfectly reliable but there's also a little bit of hesitation, I would say, a little bit of concern that they may not work. And then you think well why wouldn't they? You know?
Jo:Why wouldn't they?
Jackie:Just because they not famous.
Jo:Exactly. Just because it's not a name I know.
Jackie:Anyway Jo, looking forward to seeing the new Camper shoes.
Jo:Ah, right, ok, will do, Bye.
