Jackie: I'm talking to Jo. Hi, Jo.
Jackie: And were talking about cars and driving. Jo, I know you can drive. When did you first have driving lessons?
Jo: The first lesson was actually on my 17m birthday because that's when you can start driving in England and I was desperate to start and so my first lesson was actually on my birthday.
Jackie: Wow. How was that?
Jo: It was great. [Jackie laughs] Absolutely loved it.
Jackie: Did you pass first time?
Jo: I did. I had 6 months of lessons and I actually passed exactly on the 6th month anniversary of starting, so 6 months later, yeah.
Jackie: Can you remember what type of car you learned to drive in?
Jo: Mmm yeah. It was a very dark navy blue Toyota Corolla and it was my mum's car.
Jackie: And then did you soon buy a car after that?
Jo: Um... not soon as I was only 17. I was about 21 when I bought my first car, yeah.
Jackie: And what kind of car was that?
Jo: It was a very small, old-fashioned Mini.
Jackie: Oh, a Mini?
Jo: Yes. It was tiny [laughs].
Jackie: Was that fun to drive?
Jo: I loved it, absolutely loved it. I mean it was so exciting getting my first er... car anyway but really when I look back it was just so small.
Jackie: Yes, they're very popular now though.
Jo: I know, and much more substantial, yeah, lovely.
Jackie: But although they're fun to drive they don't go very fast, do they?
Jo: No, but I did have a very, very fast car a few years later and that was fabulous.
Jackie: What was that?
Jo: It was called, what was it? It was a Volvo 360GLT, it was secondhand, it had quite a few miles on the clock but wow did it go fast.
Jackie: It had a lot of power?
Jo: It had a lot of power and I really, really enjoyed driving that, especially motorway driving.
Jackie: So did you go fast? I mean the maximum speed limit is 70 miles an hour.
Jo: Yeah, well let's just say I pushed it a little bit [Jackie laughs] possibly passed the speed limit. It was fantastic though, great, great.
Jackie: And then um... did... have you had an economical car?
Jo: Yeah, urn... I think in my sort of middle twenties I got a brand new Fiat Punto and that was my first new car. Absolutely brand new. And again that was a special moment because I'd never had, you know, my first new car um... and that was really nice, and that was a bit more sedate. Oh that was nice, that was quite economical, yeah.
Jackie: What car do you have at the moment, Jo?
Jo: Well, I share a car with my boyfriend, and its a VW Polo.
Jackie: Ah, right.
Jo: And that's urn... it's— its quite fast, it's dependable, we've had it about 6 or 7 years now and it's... it goes really well, yeah.
Jackie: But he tends to drive it more than you do, doesn't he?
Jo: At the moment, yes. Were urn... were living in Portugal and I find some of the Portuguese driving a little bit scary, so I tend not to drive so much.
Jackie: Do you do some driving in it though?
Jo: Yeah a little, I mean I can and I love driving and I find my reticence um... in terms of driving to be a little bit of a surprise to myself but when I get behind the wheel I... I love it. I really love driving.
Jackie: If you could have a car of your choice, Jo, what would it be?
Jo: I would like a bright red Fiat 500.
Jackie: Ooh, they're fun, aren't they?
Jo: I know, my sister's got one in blue and its absolutely gorgeous but I would really like a bright red, really, really shiny one. I'd love one.
Jackie: I've always had a penchant for a Citroen 2CV but er...
Jo: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Jackie: ...maybe for pootling round the country lanes but that's about it.
Jo: Yeah, I know, I like, I like the Fiat 500 and I have liked them for ages actually, yeah.
Jackie: Yeah, they're great. Jo, thank you very much.
Jo: No, no problem.
